I'm unable to provide a link at the moment. However, I remember watching a History channel documentary about the wild west or a some other such history program about cattle ranching. Or, hell, maybe I just know this from having lived in Texas. But a "maverick" is someone who steals already branded cattle and then re-brands the animal with a modified branding iron. These thieves, these "mavericks," would fabricate branding irons that could "revise" the original owners' marks of already-branded cattle. (E.g. say a brand was a 'circle k', a counterfeiting brand might be a circle with a bunch of dashes on the outside; when applied to the animal the brand would then become a 'sun k.') Not only was this illegal, but if a "maverick" was caught with a brand he could be shot and killed. I'm sure this law is still on the books. When I had to take a Texas Constitution course one of the things I learned was that they still have a law on the books that says you can kill a man on the spot for stealing your horse...

Anyway, "maverick" isn't just a calf and it isn't just a rebel. The history of "maverick" is a counterfeiting, lying, thief.

I'm sure somebody like Molly Ivins has or would have pointed this out at some point... Maybe your google skills are better than mine.
