I like this distinction, J. And maybe it's not so dissimilar from what I was aiming for. The distinction (I think) I'm making is in the vein of Stephen North (though it's been a few years since I read Making of Knowledge):
I'm thinking "understanding" would be something like a synthesis of both knowledge and application. I'm playing around here, but understanding would be something like the ability to talk about AND perform (or, if you prefere: rhetorician AND rhetor). I don't know that "understand" is necessarily the appropriate word. Maybe something more akin to "wisdom." Maybe.

Struggling with stated/unstated is something I'll probably be doing later this week. And it's in this context that I might be considering a third term. I'm working on composing Part III of Bourdieu and Literacy as Activity right now. [That, fyi, is the context of my original comment above.] It's not high on my list of priorities for thoughts to be fleshed out. So thanks for letting me play around here!

Erm, well, about thrift stores - you have to come visit me next time you're home. There's a mennonite thrift store in town that has a whole wall stuffed with old dishes. I'm coveting some cool pitcher & glasses sets in coloured glass (amber, green, or turquoise) and a teapot with matching cream and sugar.

In the next section, Carpenter says that rhetoric is also "to some extent" a science. Then he distinguishes between rhetoric (as the principles of the art) and composition (as the skill in applying these principles). So I guess there is a non-necessary relationship between knowing and acting. You may or may not be able to articulate the principles behind an effective paragraph or what have you. But I'm not sure how this relates to understanding...

Lately I've been passively considering the stated/unstated. Your excerpt makes me think... does "understanding" = "knowing" in the sense that one can articulate what it is that they are capable of "applying"?

My question in your comments section is a bit out of context. even so...
